Note to readers:
On this Veterans Day, I decided to post this poignant letter that came to me through a reader of my blogs, a man who felt unable to speak freely and to assign his name to these heartfelt thoughts as he lives in a community that has become intolerant and threatening. As is the case in so many places these days, some members of his small town have become emboldened in their bullying and rejection of diverse voices. I am posting this letter on his behalf in remembrance of his father’s service in WWII. Sadly, this is from my home state of Michigan.
I hope you will do your part in passing this along. The sentiments are simple and cut to the heart of what many of us are feeling. It can be infuriating to imagine the huge sacrifices made by our loved ones being sullied by men and women with no regard for the basic tenets of democracy and decency. Shame on them all.

Friends:
This is my father above, a few months after spending 34 days in a field hospital after serving in Patton’s Third Army during the Battle of the Bulge, where he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Unfortunately, today, according to Donald Trump and his sycophants, who worship every mindless word he speaks, my father would now be labeled a sucker and a loser because of his battle injuries.
My father’s service left him with intense war memories that he dealt with silently his entire life. I can’t imagine how he would feel today knowing that the authoritarian Fascist regime he fought against all those years ago is now being openly embraced by the newly elected president and his cultish minions.
I can’t believe that here in America, eighty years post World War II, a healthy democracy is viewed as nothing more than a hurdle to be cleared to accomplish the new MAGA agenda. We can be sure that neither ethics nor decency will ever play a part in any GOP strategy going forward. And, of course, violence is always viewed as an option for the MAGA crowd if they feel it might be to their benefit.
I miss my parents terribly but I’m glad they’re not here right now to witness how Trump’s narcissistic psychosis has distorted the judgment of so many Americans.
The U.S. saved Europe from Hitler’s Fascist Regime in 1945. Who will come to save us when our democracy folds under the MAGA leaders?
As one European newspaper wrote after the election, “Americans Just Voted to Burn It All to the Ground.”
Sincerely, D
Chris Andrews: Thank you so very, very much for sharing these poignant, very true, even tragic facts.
Well said. My dad was a WWII vet. Both my parents would be weeping for our nation if they were still alive, as their 4 children are. Thanks for writing this!
